Make a big difference this holiday season by shopping local
The season of giving is coming up, which means it’s time to put together a shopping list filled with gifts for all your loved ones. But did you know you can also give to your community simply by shopping for the holidays at local small businesses? This one change can make a bigger economic impact than you may think — and by strengthening the community, everyone who inhabits it will reap the benefits.
Why choose local small businesses for holiday shopping?
Major retailers dominate the holiday season with huge Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales. This takes the spotlight away from local small businesses who may not be able to match the same deals or level of publicity. Small Business Saturday (on November 29 this year) was created to put the focus back on these businesses in the midst of Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping.
But why is it so important that small businesses get their shine? The simple answer is because we all need them! A whopping 86% of Americans believe that small businesses have a positive effect on the way things are going in the country, and economic statistics back this up — small businesses have accounted for 62.7% of net new job creation since 1995. This shows that the impact of small businesses isn’t small at all, and that same impact is likely to benefit other aspects of the community. For instance, when you choose to buy local, your money could help hire a new employee in the area, go toward a local charitable cause, or directly support the community member or family who runs the business.
